Card windows

Opening a card or shell in a window of its own to watch it beside the board or another agent, and how that window behaves.

On this page

A card window shows one card or shell at full size in a second window, so you can watch two agents at once, or keep an agent in view on another screen while you work on the board. The card keeps running exactly as on its board.

Open a card in its own window

Any of these opens the card or shell in its own window:

  • Open in new window in a board card's ⋯ menu, or in a shell's menu in the Shells tab;
  • ⇧⌘O / Ctrl+Shift+O (default shortcut) while it is open at full size, or the Open in new window button in the title bar;
  • Open in new window in the command palette.

A card that isn't running starts first, as opening it does. If it was open at full size in the main window, the main window goes back to the board. Each card or shell has at most one window; for one that already has its window, every one of these brings that window forward.

What a card window has

The window is titled with the card's title and its workspace, such as Fix the login redirect · web, and follows renames. It shows only the card view: its panes, zoom, the find bar, the side panel (with its tabs in the panel's own header) and the Close confirmation. It looks like the main window and uses the same theme and terminal settings.

These shortcuts work in it: ⇧⌘B / Ctrl+Shift+B, ⌘D / Ctrl+Shift+D, ⇧⌘D / Ctrl+Shift+E, ⌘W / Ctrl+Shift+W, ⇧⌘W / Ctrl+Shift+Q, ⌘F / Ctrl+Shift+F, ⇧⌘Enter / Ctrl+Shift+Enter, ⌘↑ / Ctrl+Shift+ArrowUp, ⌘↓ / Ctrl+Shift+ArrowDown, ⇧⌘A / Ctrl+Shift+A and ⌥⌘B / Ctrl+Alt+B (which shows or hides the panel in every window, as the setting is shared).

A card window has no sidebar, board, title bar, command palette or Settings. The app's own shortcuts (Settings, Command palette, Next waiting card, New shell and switching workspaces) do nothing there.

On the board

While a card is in its own window, its board card shows an In window chip (a shell's row in the Shells tab too). Everything else on the board stays as it was: its status, activity, agent status, context bar and dev server chips, and you can still move it or use its menu.

Opening the card from the main window, by clicking it, picking it in the palette, pressing Next waiting card or clicking its notification, brings its window forward and changes nothing in the main window.

While its window is focused you are looking at the card, so Bikube doesn't notify you about it.

Close a card window

Closing the window, with its close button (or File › Close Window on macOS) or with ⇧⌘B / Ctrl+Shift+B in it, puts the card back on its board, still running, with its panes and layout as they were. The main window doesn't change.

The window's Move to main window button, or ⇧⌘O / Ctrl+Shift+O in it, closes the window and opens the card at full size in the main window instead.

The window also closes when the card's main shell stops (it exits or is closed), when the card or its workspace is deleted, and when the main window closes or reloads. Quitting Bikube closes them all.

Card windows are never saved: after a restart every card is on its board, stopped, and no window reopens.
