The board
Views
The Kanban and Grid views of a workspace, and how cards are sorted in them.
On this page
A workspace can show its cards as a Kanban board, with a lane for each column, or as a Grid of every card, latest first. This page explains both views, how to pick one, and how sorting works in a Kanban board. Neither view changes your cards: they are two ways of looking at the same board.
Kanban and Grid
- Kanban shows the workspace's columns as lanes, each with its cards top to bottom. Use it when the stage of each task matters: you drag cards from Backlog to Review as the work moves along.
- Grid shows every card of the workspace in one grid, latest first, with the cards waiting for you at the top. Use it when you run many agents at once and mostly care about which ones need you.
Choose a view
Each workspace's View is set in its Create or Edit workspace dialog:
| View | Shows |
|---|---|
| Default | Whatever Settings' Default view says on this machine (the dialog shows which, such as Default (Kanban)). New workspaces start here. |
| Kanban | Always the Kanban board. |
| Grid | Always the grid. |
To switch the workspace in front quickly, pick View: Grid or View: Kanban in the command palette; it sets the same View.
A workspace's own Kanban or Grid choice is saved with the workspace and synced with it to your other machines. Default follows each machine's own setting, so the same workspace can show as Kanban on one computer and Grid on another.
The Default view setting is in Settings, Appearance (Kanban unless you picked Grid). The first launch asks for it while there is no workspace yet; see Your first workspace.
The grid
The grid puts every card of the workspace in one of three sections, each with its count:
- Needs you: running cards whose agent is waiting for you or needs your answer.
- Running: the other running cards.
- Stopped: cards that aren't running. Only this section folds: click its heading to fold or unfold it. Bikube keeps that choice in every workspace until you quit.
Within each section, cards are latest first: ordered by when each was created (on any machine) or last opened on this machine, whichever is later. Cards from before Bikube kept those times come last.
Above the grid:
- Search cards narrows the grid to cards whose title, worktree branch or agent name contain every word you type, in any case. Esc clears the search.
- The filter (All, Needs you, Running, Stopped) shows one section only. Each choice shows how many cards it would show with the current search.
Each section folds after the Card display limit (Settings, Appearance; 10 by default), with a Show all N cards button.
What the grid doesn't do
The grid has no columns in view, so it offers no moves between columns: cards can't be dragged, Alt plus the arrow keys don't move them, and their menu has no Move to. + New card in the grid adds the card to the bottom of the workspace's first column.
Cards keep their columns
Switching a workspace between Kanban and Grid changes no card: every card keeps its column and its place in it, and switching back shows the board exactly as it was. While a workspace shows Grid:
board movestill moves its cards between columns (see The board command).- Its automatic moves wait: its Edit dialog hides the rules and none runs. They are kept and work again once it shows Kanban.
Sort cards in a column
A Kanban board can order the cards in its columns in two ways:
- Manual order (the default): the order you put them in, by dragging or with the keyboard. This is the board's stored order.
- Recently opened first: the grid's latest-first rule, column by column. Cards with no time come last, in board order.
Set it from any column's ⋯ menu (Sort: Manual order or Sort: Recently opened first) or under Sort cards in the Edit workspace dialog. The sort is one setting for the whole board, saved with the workspace and synced.
Sorting only changes what you see; it never changes the stored order. While the board is sorted by Recently opened first:
- a card dropped into another column goes to the bottom of that column's stored order (the column is outlined while you drag, with no drop line);
- a drop within the same column, and ⌥↑ / Alt+ArrowUp or ⌥↓ / Alt+ArrowDown on a focused card, do nothing;
- moving a card to another column with ⌥← / Alt+ArrowLeft, ⌥→ / Alt+ArrowRight, its menu or
board moveworks as usual; - the Card display limit folds the column in its sorted order.
Switch back to Manual order and the column shows its stored order again, unchanged.
