Global shortcut

Setting a system-wide shortcut that shows or hides Bikube from any app and can open the next waiting card.

On this page

A global shortcut brings Bikube forward from any app, or hides it again, with one key combination. Bikube can also open the next card that waits for you at the same time, so answering an agent takes one keypress wherever you are.

Set it

There is no global shortcut by default, since it takes its key combination away from every other app.

  1. Open Settings and pick Shortcuts.
  2. Under Global, click the field beside Show or hide Bikube (from any app); it reads None until you set one.
  3. Press the combination you want, with Cmd, Ctrl or Alt and a key, such as Ctrl+Alt+Space. Esc cancels.

It applies at once. Clear removes it, which frees the combination for other apps again.

A combination one of Bikube's own shortcuts already uses is refused with Already used by …, and one the system can't register globally with Can't be a global shortcut. While you record any shortcut in Settings, the global shortcut is paused, so pressing it is recorded instead of hiding the window.

What it does

  • When Bikube's window is in front and focused, the shortcut hides it: on macOS Bikube hides and the app you used before comes back; on Linux the window is minimized.
  • Otherwise (another app is in front, or Bikube is behind another window, minimized or hidden), it shows and focuses Bikube's main window. On macOS, with the window closed, it opens a new one.

Each press toggles once. It acts on the main window only, never on a card window.

Open the next waiting card

Under the shortcut, Open the next waiting card (on by default) makes each press that brings Bikube forward also open the card or shell that has waited longest for you, exactly as ⌘J / Ctrl+Shift+J does (see Activity & status). Nothing extra happens when nothing waits, when the only waiting card is the one already open, or while a dialog is open. Turn it off to bring the window back as you left it.

With it on, the global shortcut takes you from your editor or browser straight to the agent that needs you; press ⌘J / Ctrl+Shift+J for the next one, then the global shortcut again to go back to your work.

When it doesn't work

When another app already holds the combination, or the desktop doesn't allow global shortcuts (such as a Wayland session without the global shortcuts portal), Settings shows Couldn't register this shortcut: another app may use it, or the desktop doesn't allow global shortcuts under it. The shortcut stays saved, and Bikube tries again at the next launch and whenever you change it.

The global shortcut is kept per machine, in your settings; it is never synced.
